Did you know that we have a professional basketball player on the roster at CFF? Now ya do! We wanted to let everyone get to know Maren W (aka Tall Maren) and learn more about her interesting life outside of CFF. When she can get away from her green and gold duties she usually shows up to 6:30 a.m. or 8:30 a.m. classes. If you see her ask her how much she benches as she didn't disclose that in her responses!
How long have you been CrossFitting?
I have been doing CrossFit for 3.5 years.
What was your fitness/athletic background before starting CrossFit?
I’ve always considered myself an athlete as I was a collegiate & professional basketball player. *
What's your day job?
My day job…is more like my day / night / weekend / 40+ hr a week job. I am the head basketball coach at NDSU, and I love it.
What are your hobbies/interests other than CrossFit?
Outside of working out & being around basketball, I enjoy DIY projects, spending time at the cabin with my large extended family & traveling in the US and overseas.
If you started in Boot Camp, what made you decide to give it a try?
I did not do boot camp….just jumped right in to the deep end having never done a clean, a snatch, a rope climb or hand stand. I might be crazy!
How has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?
I really love coming to the gym & just being an athlete (as opposed to the coach). CrossFit has fueled my competitive juice (even though I have ZERO interest in actually competing) & given me time to be selfish & focus solely on me. I know I am a much better human for EVERYONE I interact with when I work out regularly.
Please share a memorable experience you’ve had because of CrossFit.
I can’t say I have 1 experience that sticks out. I enjoy gaining skills in movements, seeing my PR’s increase is satisfying as well. But I really love the friendly conversation & encouragement coaches & peers display EVERY DAY in the gym. The mobility, nutrition, charity work, the ‘total package’ CFF strives for is the best experience. I love walking in knowing I am going to improve, and I love walking out with a feeling of confidence & enthusiasm to win the day.
What are your favorite exercises and/or aspects of CrossFit?
Being 6’2’’ & clearly having NO gymnastic-y background, I’m a HUGE fan of benching! The more straight strength involved the better! I might be crazy, but wall balls rank high on my list as well.
What advice can you give to people thinking about trying CrossFit?
My advice would be to just try it. I had a list of excuses to not try – I’m too tall (everyone you see on TV is like 5’8’’)… have minimal cartilage in my knees, there’s no way I could do most things….I know I can push weight, but I don’t know how to do “Olympic lifts”…I really don’t want tore up hands….you get the point. At the end of the day we all strive to live a healthy lifestyle. It might not be CrossFit you choose…but why not give it a try….CrossFit might just choose you!
