Tap into the Power of a Growth Mindset

By now, I’m sure you have all heard the term “mindset,” but what does it mean and how does it affect us? Mindset is the set of beliefs and attitudes we hold, and it affects every aspect of our lives.

Our mindset has even been shown to change our brains. I t's kind of a big deal!

There are two types of mindset, fixed and growth. In a fixed mindset, people believe they are born with their intelligence, talents, and abilities. If you’ve ever heard someone say, “I’m bad at math,” you’ve witnessed a fixed mindset. We aren’t born “bad” at math; our attitude, work ethic, and style of learning all influence how challenging this skill is.

In a growth mindset, we believe our abilities can be developed through hard work and dedication. Having this view creates the resilience and desire to continue learning throughout our lives that is necessary for success. Simply adding the word “yet” at the end of a statement is a game changer.

“I’m not good at math YET, but it becomes easier every day I work at it."

If you recognize yourself as having a fixed mindset as an adult, it’s not too late. Our mindset is typically shaped by our experiences during childhood (parents take note!), but you can start making small changes now to help foster a growth mindset.

Instead of focusing on success in terms of numbers or awards, start focusing on the effort you are putting into the task at hand and your attitude in doing so. When you do this, success is sure to follow.

The power of YET is incredibly effective and it’s something you can do for others as well. As you can imagine, a growth mindset helps create motivation and productivity. There is always something new to learn, so don’t limit yourself with a crummy attitude.

This week, I challenge you to use the word YET for yourself, your children, and others. Just seeing someone having a growth mindset is inspiring, and can help create the same attitudes in others.

You may not have a growth mindset YET, but you’re taking the steps to get there!
