Featuring Kylie H: From Boot Camp to Weightlifting Competitions
JAG: How long have you been doing CrossFit?
Kylie H: Since July 1st, 2015
What was your fitness/athletic background before starting CrossFit?
I played a lot of sports in high school (volleyball, basketball, track) and worked out occasionally after. I never really found a workout exercise I wanted to come back to after I was done with high school. Until July 1st, 2015.
What is your day job?
I work on the Creative Media team at Scheels making films.
What are your hobbies/interests other than CrossFit?
Traveling. Photography. Movies. (But really I just like to lift weights and hangout at the gym)
You started in Boot Camp, what made you decide to give it a try?
Both of my roommates wouldn’t shut up about CrossFit (Nicki and Chloe at the time). Finally I made a deal with Nicki. I told her if I do this “bootcamp thing” for the 6 weeks, she could never talk to me about CrossFit ever again. She agreed. After I finished boot camp, I got really into it and saw amazing results in my physical appearance as well as my confidence. Nicki looks at me sometimes and says out loud, “look at the monster I’ve created,” and it’s true. I love it. I’ve never looked back.
What was Boot Camp like?
Boot Camp was wonderful! It was hard, but not too hard to where it seemed impossible, it was challenging, and you started to form bonds with the people who went through it with you. I’ve always been a morning WODer, and having fun people there everyday has always been the biggest benefit of CrossFit. It’s so easy after week 3 to think, my body hurts and I’ve done enough. The bootcamp was a good training ground to get yourself through the harder times. If you can make it through the 6 weeks, you might as well keep going into the regular class. Everything was scalable and I never, still don’t, feel like I’m doing less. Eventually I’ll be able to do everything Rx, but then again, Rx should always be something I’m striving for.
Why did you decide to start regular CrossFit training after boot camp?
I decided to go to regular classes because I drank all the juice and wanted more. The 630 AM crew, my old normal time, are the best people you’ll meet. They are the ones that really kept encouraging me through those first months. My very first regular class workout was a mile run time trial. I was so scared to run the mile that I almost didn't go. But I sucked it up and got my butt to the gym. Obviously everyone beat me, but once I got back to the gym, I was greeted by all the high fives and fist bumps. It was a great feeling of accomplishment. And yesterday I we ran a mile time trial. I decided to do it with a weight vest and it was the one thing I was looking forward to the entire day. Crazy how much a you can change in a year.
How has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?
CrossFit has given me a type of confidence that I’ve never felt before. I feel so empowered that I feel like I can put my body through a lot of hard, physical activity and know that I’ll come out the other side. It’s a great feeling that is irreplaceable.
Please share a memorable experience you’ve had because of CrossFit.
This past year I competed in a couple of different competitions. I’ve done 2 Olympic Weightlifting Competitions, Granite Games, and a smaller competition at EHP in early December. If I were to look at myself 2 years ago and know this is what I would be doing now, I would have called you crazy. The weightlifting comps were so fun, but so scary. I got to experience weight cutting, which wasn't as bad as people make it out to be. And I did my first major CrossFit comp with the Granite Games. They are good tests to see where you are. It’s really fun.
What are your favorite exercises and/or aspects of CrossFit?
SNATCHES. CLEAN AND JERKS. FRONT AND BACK SQUATS, ALL DAY EVERYDAY!
What advice can you give to people thinking about trying CrossFit?
Just do it. Even if you have to make a deal with your roommates, you should try it. You lose nothing going to bootcamp. It was the best life decision I’ve ever made. I’m 30lbs lighter from when I started, 3 sizes smaller in clothes, and I’ve never felt more confident in my life. The community is something I’ve never been apart of before. Going through hell with these people makes you closer, and it makes you fight for them. They are your people. It’s a bond forged in sweat, blood, and tears. I’m pretty sure we wouldn’t trade any of it for the world.
