Sunday 10/23/16 Team RWB "1983 Beirut Barracks Bombing"

At 0620 on 23 October 1983 - a suicide bomber in a yellow Mercedes Benz truck slammed into the building serving as the barracks for 1st Battalion 8th Marines (Battalion Landing Team - BLT 1/8) 24th Marine Amphibious Unit at the Beirut International Airport and detonated his explosives, which were later estimated to be equivalent to approximately 9,525 kilograms (21,000 pounds) of TNT. The force of the explosion initially lifted the entire four-story structure, shearing the bases of the concrete support columns, each measuring fifteen feet in circumference and reinforced by numerous one-and-three-quarter-inch steel rods. The airborne building then fell in upon itself. The resulting death toll were 232 Marines, 18 Sailors and three soldiers, plus another 128 injured, making the bombing the deadliest single-day death toll for the Untied States Marine Corps since WWII's Battle of Iwo Jima and the deadliest single terrorist attack on American citizens overseas.
